Best of the West Deals with Western Alienation
Canadians in western Canada, particularly in the late 1980s and early 1990s, began expressing a growing sense of “disconnect” from Ottawa and central Canada. Regional interests were fueling growth in regional political parties. And once again, national unity issues were simmering.
So in 1989, the Best of the West Program was launched.
Best of the West Program was a month-long first-hand experience in Ottawa for young people. The experience introduced them to the Parliamentary process.
“We want young Canadians to become active participants in the economy. They want jobs. They deserve jobs. Young people want to embrace the future not fear it. And it’s up to all of us to create that hope and opportunity for them.” Dennis Mills
